Morocco revived its hopes of progressing to the round of 16 of Qatar 2022 a huge by hammering Belgium on Sunday, winning by 2 to nil. The goals came late through substitutes Abdelhamid Sabiri 73’and Zakaria Aboukhlal in the (90’+2).
Sabiri broke the deadlock with a free-kick – the first direct set piece scored at this FIFA World Cup. Aboukhlal then sealed the deal in extra time giving the Atlas Lions the much needed three points.

Roberto Martinez’s 2018 semi-finalists, Belgium, would have progressed to the last 16 with a victory but, as in their narrow opening win over Canada, they failed to find top gear and may now have to beat Croatia in their last group game to qualify. For now, Morocco sits top of Group F with four points, with Croatia and Canada to play.
The North Africans have not reached the knockout rounds since 1986, when they beat Portugal 3-1 to get there. Their last group game will be against Canada and will be hoping to go further after what was their first victory at the World Cup since beating Scotland 3-0 in 1998.
Morocco had the majority of the crowd at Al Thumama Stadium on their side and they gave their fans something worthy their support as they humiliated the second ranked team in the world.
